Jorge Eliécer Gaitán was assassinated on April 9, 1948, and one of the bloodiest days in Colombia's history ensued. This included the infamous "Bogotazo", the rioting in Bogotá. It is understandably yet unfortunately a relatively forgotten day here in Bogotá.
